In the Commonwealth of Virginia, Alexandria is an independent city. Located along the west bank of the Potomac River south of Washington D.C., Alexandria is just south of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington County. It is also served by Washington Dulles International Airport in Chantilly, Virginia, and Baltimore-Washington International Airport near Baltimore, Maryland. Alexandria is home to numerous non-profit associations and charities including the national headquarters of groups such as the United Way. The historic center of Alexandria, known as Old Town, is a major tourist attraction. Old Town area of Alexandria is overshadowed by a huge fountain, exquisite landscaping details, and holds a weekly farmers' market in the warmer months. There are also a variety of cultural activities, theatres, excellent schools, and fine restaurants. On the other side of the Potomac River, there is a busy downtown district with a hopping nightlife. As with Old Town, most of Alexandria's neighborhoods are wealthy, affluent suburbs. Alexandria also has many historical and cultural landmarks including the George Washington Masonic National Memorial, United States Patent and Trademark Office, Christ Church, Gatsby's Tavern, the Lyceum Theater, and Market Square. Alexandria offers varied housing options, including some high-end suburban estates which provides an exceptional urban living lifestyle. The average home price is approximately $650,000.
